This lesson introduces the literary reader 'The Talking Earth' by celebrated nature author Jean Craighead George. Students meet the young Native American protagonist, Billie Wind, who lives near the Everglades in Florida. Billie loves modern science and questions her Seminole tribe elders when they claim that the Earth can 'talk' and share wisdom with those who listen. Disappointed by her disbelief, the tribal elders send Billie on a solo canoe journey into the vast Everglades wilderness to listen to nature firsthand.
